Corrosion Control System

Galvanic Isolator System (GIS)

Whenever a ship is connected to shore power, the hull and drive systems are connected to the shore grounding system and to other adjacent vessels through the grounding conductor in the shore power cable. This connection, while required for safety, creates a galvanic corrosion cell involving the dissimilar metals between the ship and the shore grounding system.

The Galvanic Isolator System (GIS) is a device that reduces stray low-voltage currents travelling between the shore power's AC safety ground (earth) and the ship's DC bonding system, while maintaining the safety requirement of an electrical path to ground during a short circuit. By installing a galvanic isolator, stray current and galvanic corrosion are prevented.
